Today's episode is a reminder to be extra gentle with yourself and in case you were waiting for a permission slip, here it is: it's safe for you to slow down. After all, t'is the season of rest and nothing in nature blooms all year round - including you.
Slowing down may mean a midday nap, bath or a festive movie. Or taking things off your to-do list, without the guilt. Or spending more time nourishing your health - mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Lately I’ve been leaning greatly into my restorative practices like yoga and meditation to soothe my nervous system and turning inwards to find a sense of safety and peace. Although this time during the pandemic has impacted me in many uncomfortable ways, it has given me a beautiful opportunity to deepen my spiritual connection and feel supported, even in the midst of uncertainty.
And, if there’s one lesson that 2020 has taught me, it’s that it’s okay to slow down. This change of pace was forced upon us and like many others, I resisted it at first. Perhaps you did too? But the more I surrendered to what life was asking of me in the moment, the more space I made to reorganise my life in support of what really matters to me.
In December, things do naturally tend to speed up and time is moving so fast this year that it feels like we have less time to get things ready.
I don’t say that to panic you, but let this episode be your reminder to breeeeathe and that you are right on time.
Whenever you feel yourself speeding up, physically or mentally, say this mantra:
It’s safe for me to slow down, relax and let go.
Just notice the effect on your body and mind as you say that.
You can also turn to this pranayama practice, known as Box Breathing.
Use this to centre you, slow down your energy and practise patience as you pause - so you can continue through your day with ease and grace.
Get comfortable and close your eyes if you can do so safely. Breathe in fully and exhale completely. Continue breathing in this way. As you inhale and exhale, feel your body soften as your energy slows down. With each breath, you feel lighter as you release any anxiety, stress or tension. Give yourself permission to enjoy the simple flow of your breath just for a few more moments.
Now we're going to inhale for a count of 4, hold at the top of the inhale for 4, exhale for 4 and hold at the bottom of the exhale 4.
Relax into that still space in between the inhale and the exhale.
Try this for a few rounds until you feel a sense of relief and your energy slowing down.
Inhale 2-3-4
Hold 2-3-4
Exhale 2-3-4
Hold 2-3-4
This practice allows you to take good care of your mind and body, cultivate joy and connection and realign with your purpose.
I hope this serves you this month - and beyond.
Slow down and witness all that speeds up in your world.
